How Get Up Slim Down Works - a Note from Shawn M. Talbott, Ph.D.
How do I know that the GET UP - SLIM DOWN Program will work for you? Because it has been studied, and it has been proven to work in groups of the toughest cases we could find. These "tough cases" were people who had tried every popular diet and exercise craze and yet still found themselves with extra weight to lose. They were people who had counted the calories, and the fat grams, and the carb grams—but the weight remained. They were people who had been exercising religiously all along, some of them even partnering with a personal trainer in an effort to “force” those pounds away with extremes of exercise—but again, to no avail. The pounds stayed put. Not until these people joined a study of GET UP - SLIM DOWN did they find the solution—and the success—they had been looking for.
The results were nothing short of dramatic. Not only did virtually every person in the program lose body weight, body fat, and inches around their midsection, but the majority of people also reported increased feelings of energy, reduced stress/anxiety, control of appetite and cravings, and no feelings of deprivation. The most common comment about GET UP - SLIM DOWN (and it’s one we hear a lot) is that nobody feels like they are on a “diet” and yet they continue to lose weight, fat, and inches. Plus, they feel great doing it.
Of particular interest with GET UP - SLIM DOWN is the fact that taking a dietary supplement for controlling stress, cortisol, testosterone, and HSD (in addition to following the diet and exercise prescriptions) seemed to help participants to lose more weight/fat and more inches from their waist compared to when they had tried their own versions of diet and exercise alone. In no way does this mean that the supplement was a substitute for diet and exercise, but it suggests strongly that by adding the supplement to their diet and exercise regimen, they were able to reap some additional metabolic control and thus enjoy a greater degree of weight loss. In many ways, the results make perfect sense, because taking a supplement means that you have additional factors driving you toward weight loss (compared to relying on diet and exercise alone). The bottom-line effects of GET UP - SLIM DOWN show us that it helps people lose more of those stubborn “last few pounds”—even if they have struggled with those pounds for a long time.
When we look across the last 5-6 years of conducting the GET UP - SLIM DOWN PROGRAM on approximately one thousand subjects, we generally find the following results:
• Individuals lose about one-half to one pound of fat each week. I say “fat” instead of just “weight” because it’s important to know that our participants are losing the fat and keeping the muscle—meaning they are thinner and healthier, but they maintain their metabolic rate, which helps them keep the weight off.
• Cortisol levels drop and testosterone levels rise, resulting in a rebalancing of the "cortisol-to-testosterone ratio" toward one that favors fat loss and muscle maintenance. Our GET UP - SLIM DOWN participants generally see a change in this C:T ratio of 15–20 percent, and it is one of the major biochemical effects (along with reduced activity of HSD - a potent fat-storing enzyme) that makes them feel so good, with elevated mood, abundant energy, and clear thinking.
• Metabolic rate stays exactly the same, meaning that GET UP - SLIM DOWN prevents the drop in metabolism that you would expect with a standard weight-loss diet. This happens because the participant’s hormones are balanced and his/her muscle mass is preserved, whereas on many other diets, hormones become disrupted and the person loses muscle.
• Cholesterol (both total cholesterol and “bad,” or LDL, cholesterol) falls by about 20 percent. This is partly due to better eating, partly due to hormone maintenance, and partly due to a gradual loss of body fat.
• Mood and energy levels increase and depression and tension levels decrease, often by an astonishing amount (up to 50 percent or more), due to the maintenance of hormone profiles and the fact that participants are losing fat without depriving themselves.
Perhaps the most striking statistic from our studies of GET UP - SLIM DOWN—even more exciting than the fat loss, the maintenance of hormones and metabolism, or even the significant drop in cholesterol levels —is the extremely high compliance rate (indicating how many people actually finish GET UP - SLIM DOWN and lose weight). Our compliance rate of 91 percent is higher than any other program I have ever encountered. Most of the popular “diet book” programs, from Atkins to South Beach to Zone, and even Weight Watchers, have compliance rates of around 30-50 percent.
The data from our various offerings of GET UP - SLIM DOWN have been presented at some of the top nutrition-science conferences in the world, including the International Congress on Nutrition and Fitness, the American College of Nutrition, Experimental Biology, the American College of Sports Medicine, the International Society for Sports Nutrition, and The Obesity Society.
Attendees at these research conferences generally find that the most interesting feature of the GET UP - SLIM DOWN Program is not any single aspect of the program, but rather that the synergy between the component parts is so effective when melded into a single approach. For example, we’ve known for years that regular exercise and a balanced diet are the foundation of a healthy weight-management program, but what GET UP - SLIM DOWN shows is that by building on the diet/exercise foundation with attention to balanced metabolism (of cortisol, testosterone, HSD, and the rest), the “standard” weight-loss results of diet plus exercise can be optimized, much to the delight of GET UP - SLIM DOWN adherents.
